Expo '86

Posted 07-25-2005 at 07:31 PM by HeartlandGirl
Sometimes I think this cycle never ends
We slide from top to bottom then we turn and climb again
And it seems by the time that I have figured what it's worth
The squeaking of our skin against the steel has gotten worse
But if I move my place in line I'll lose
And I have waited, the anticipation's got me glued
I am waiting for something to go wrong
I am waiting for familiar resolve
Sometimes it seems that I don't have the skills to recollect...

For lack of a better title, my Stereophonics concert review

Posted 05-06-2005 at 09:41 PM by HeartlandGirl
Word is the newest Stereophonics album "Language. Sex. Violence. Other?" has already been to number 1 on the UK charts. Alas, they are virtually unknown here in the States, like so many other fantastic bands that show some intelligence, some rocking, some lack of pop and polish. And so it goes that I was front row to see Stereophonics at the Clubhouse, a tiny club in an Arizona strip mall.

Two acts were scheduled to open, but only one played--a local band called...

The Music of the Night

Posted 01-29-2005 at 09:03 PM by HeartlandGirl
I have a music box that plays this. Such immense beauty. A song that gives you chills, makes your heart ache, and leaves you longing.

Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness wakes and stirs imagination
Silently the senses abandon their defenses
Helpless to resist the notes I write
For I compose the music of the night

Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender ...

Once More With Feeling: My CD Collection

Posted 01-06-2005 at 03:11 PM by HeartlandGirl
A long time ago I posted a list of albums I own, and that included cassette tapes and stuff I don't even have with me where I live. Here's the new list, which I've typed up in a different format so that I can update it more easily than I could the last one. This list is only CDs. I own lots of great albums on cassette, but alas, I just really don't mess with them anymore. My stupid word processor won't let me copy the numbers, so I'll just update the total number when necessary.

Home for the Holidays (pictures)

Posted 12-23-2004 at 07:59 PM by HeartlandGirl
Just wanted to post some pictures from my trip home. Sorry they're kinda blurry--I'm not so sure how great my mom's digital camera is.

Here's me. I'm excited because I don't get to wear vests in Phoenix.

This is Hollis, my mom's bulldog. This is one of his rare calmer moments. For the music fans, you can see some of the CDs I brought with me, too. ...

A Memorial for My Cat, MC

Posted 12-06-2004 at 07:12 PM by HeartlandGirl
I talked to my mom tonight and found out that they had to put my cat, MC, to sleep. She was 18 years old.

We got MC when we moved back from Michigan to Oklahoma. I was in the fifth grade. Someone we knew had found a dead mother cat and some dead kittens, but one of the kittens had survived. It was MC.

In the fifth grade I was a huge fan of rap music (as I still am). I adopted the kitten and named her MC in honor of all the rappers I liked back then. It also stood...

Hurt

Posted 12-04-2004 at 09:20 PM by HeartlandGirl
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become,
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown

Disintegration

Posted 11-09-2004 at 09:54 PM by HeartlandGirl
I learned this at yoga tonight, and I don't want to forget it, so here it is, documented for my future reference.

Our way of life is to disintegrate into our many selves. We think "I will finally be happy when _______ happens." We think that when we finally make lots of money, have a family, find our soulmate, earn a degree, reach a certain status, attain enlightenment, etc., we will be happy, and that it's ok for us to be miserable now on the path to those things...

I Smell Peaceful

Posted 11-01-2004 at 09:20 PM by HeartlandGirl
Been awhile since I had just a "how my day was" type of journal entry, so let's do this!

Just got home from yoga class. At the end of class while we were all lying in Savasana (corpse pose), the instructors came around and massaged our shoulders, temples, and foreheads. And they used some kind of wonderful smelling stuff when they did it. I was just lying there, very chilled and breathing really, really slowly, taking in the smell. Now I'm at home and I...

Interpol and Secret Machines show, or...

Posted 10-31-2004 at 12:37 PM by HeartlandGirl
The Night I Discovered How Indie I Am

Last night I saw Interpol and Secret Machines at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe. By the time I got into the theater, the opening act, On!Air!Library!, were finishing up. I caught the last three songs of their set, including "Bread," which mofo had sent me right before I left for the show. Their songs were nice and the vocals were cool, but for the most part, the crowd just stood there, applauding politely...
