It's not the case of feeling the pedals but needing to be able to slide your foot a bit on the pedals. Even sneakers are not ideal but far better than the gummy sole of creepers.

Neil Peart from Rush uses dancers' shoes with leather soles. Leather sole shoes do work best. One can slide their foot on the pedals perfect like that.

I've often slipped my shoes OFF once behind the kit, as it's easier to play in socks.

That's what I was thinking, he must slip them off behind the drum kit and change into the other shoes to play the gig in.
