I realised last saturday that I can actually tune by ear now I didn't even know I could! ok, I needed the piano for the first time, but it was a new string on my friends guitar and it kept going out of key really fast (damn those stupid new nylon strings!) so I had to keep tuning, and I just played Sunday Bloody Sunday and automatically tuned it

music theory is essential, unless you're like some supergifted musician who just makes stuff up and it sounds great.
ive taken one theory course and while it may not have been the most fun thing in the world, when i actually started applying the stuff to my playing/writing music the difference was noticeable.

It's alot easier if you can sight read too...session work will probably just fall into your lap...if ya want to do that sort of thing...but for me up to now..readin notation is hard...but in time I hope it becomes easeir

Hmm, I have an M.A. (hons.) in musicology but can´t get myself to study again to do the PhD. To be professor you´ll need a list of publications, first work assistance for a couple of years etc.

If you ever pass by I can show you our institute of musicology, and the phonogram archive which happens to be the oldest in the world.

I specialized in ethnomusicology and the music industry, then I started my indie label. What are you interested in?

Interesting, which institute if you don't mind me asking? I've talked with a professor of mine about the whole PhD thing, and we got into the amount of work, and how many master's students he sees who just don't go through with the PhD for various reasons.

I'm mostly interested in studying popular music, which is apparently in sort of high demand right now (at least in the academic world), but I'm not ruling out classical or ethnomusicology by any means. I want to be open to anything that comes about.

Theory is fun.. I enjoy it sometimes...think of it as the building blocks instead of 'rules'

I plan on using my music ed. major to become a college professor...once I finish all the fraking school that is Haha

PS: Piano is an amazing way to learn Theory..take it up

I was a music major. And now I'm an HR specialist. That seems about right!

I used to teach piano lessons, however, and I insisted on teaching the kids theory. I find even a basic level of music theory to be very helpful as I do things now like sing in choir or sight read at the piano during rehearsals.

ha i hate them. alot of people in my family can do that...unfortunately those gifts werent passed down to me

thats cool! yeah my guitar teacher made me start with theory when i began.
i know its really important, its just way boring
