I believe I said "you guys are disgusting!" and then they meowed at me impatiently while I scrubbed at the barf so they could get back on the cat tree. Dirty little shits...

Thanks. She seems a bit better today. Still limping, but it took her over an hour of running, romping and wrestling this morning before she settled down and walked a bit, so I could see. She's been extremely active all day.

I don't think it was being afraid that caused her rapid breathing, although fear or excitement can cause it. She was also doing it in her sleep, which is what worried me. From what I read, it can also happen if they're in pain, which I suspect may have been the cause here, unless it was something like Beth said, and she bruised a lung.

I still wonder if I was counting her breathing accurately. It said that normal respiration in cats is 30 - 40 breaths per minute, with smaller cats/kittens tending to be a bit higher. Abby was up around 90-ish per minute, and even Jack and Zoey were around 60 or more. I'll have to ask the vet about it, the next time I take them in.

Patches was breathing rapidly when she was just injured (bite wounds to the leg) so it might not necessarily be related to a problem with the lungs. I know she was in a lot of pain.

Although Max rallied a bit on Friday evening and Saturday, he went downhill again starting late Saturday night and continued to get weaker throughout Sunday. He has that look -- the one that says "it's time" -- now, so in just under an hour and a half I'm taking him to be put to sleep.

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts.

I lost my own little Max almost two years ago, so I feel your heartbreak. I'm sorry to hear about your loss and hope in time a new kitty finds it's way into your life.

I saw Max playing with something yesterday and couldn't figure out what he was having such a good time with. (considering all the money I spend on toys and things) When I approached the room I recognized what it was.
It was literally a small piece of shit, covered in litter. He just tossed it around like some kind of ball. I just stood looking at him, laughing my ass off. Shaking my head and wondering if a kitten can be mentally challenged.
