They're a post-rock band that Phanan recommends. I figured I'd give them a shot. Axver had a song by them I dug on one of his DI lists.

The fact that I can't remember anything by them can't be a good sign.
Good luck.

They're admittedly not a "big name" for post-rock.

Yeah, I have two Explosions albums, which I enjoy, so I figured I'd try out a little more post-rock while I'm at it. Not sure how I'll feel about it, but I figure it's earned a shot.

I'm starting to get into pre-rock. Love it.

I've seen God is an Astronaut live, they opened one of the stages at a festival, they put on a pretty good show.

I'm finally getting around to giving The Jam my time. True fact: I was an idiot for waiting this long. Their music is right up my alley.

For all the hype that Massive Attack's Mezzanine gets, I think it's got a couple of clunkers too! I mean Black Milk? and the title track? Nothing special.
And Group Four gets good in the second half. The last song is just track 5 with some vocals. All that said, Angel -- Man Next Door is awesome! |

My favorite of those three is Exile. But the other two are obviously essential as well. I remember Exile literally knocking me on my ass the very first time I listened to it. Good luck. |

I agree with the Mogwai (for everyone, not just post-rock fans), not really sure if I'd recommend Happy Songs for Happy People as one of the first things from them to check out (though I do love it greatly).

Like other trip-hop albums, I think it's hard for a lot of people presently to "get" why they were so influential, as a lot of the sounds or styles have made their way into most of the genres (rock, hip hop, electronica, etc). I too have never understood the whole 'Exchange' and '(Exchange)' thing. I'm not sure if the () version is supposed to be a "bonus" track, or what. I agree that Group Four is kind of a bore until the end as well. I actually like Black Milk though, but I'm admittedly a fan boy of Elisabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins, so that might be part of it (she also sings on Teardrop and Group Four on the album). By the way, how cool are the samples on 'Man Next Door'? When the Levee Breaks by Led Zep AND 10:15 on a Saturday Night by The Cure??? NICE. |
