W3rd.

Gov. Commissions seems to be a good first album, as I've won at least 3 people over to Mogwai with it*. Even though it's not officially one, it essentially works as a default "best of" quite well (especially since they're live versions).

That was after one, lengthy listen, though, so I've no idea how it will sort out after a few more.

Glad I heard it, though. Some great shit on there.

Now, on to Led Zeppelin.

I claim to know quite a bit about music, but each day I find that to be more and more of a lie. Today, I took the initiative and made a list of 108 albums that I either need to burn onto disc or haven't heard at all/all the way through that I feel are of interest to me. Here's a highly distilled version:

Daft Punk - Discovery

I will vouch for all of these.

I seem to find that the more and more albums and bands I listen to, the more I realize I've never heard or straight up almost have to ignore as I just don't have the time, concentration, or ability to listen to everything that everyone has ever thought was important. Half the time when people ask me what I'm listening to, I don't know what to respond to as there are so many things it takes me a while to even figure out what I have been listening to. I've slowed down a little (ok, maybe very little) in my buying, as I'd rather get to know things a little better and not feel like I'm in a constant music daze where I can't remember what new albums I've gotten sound like or if I like them or not.

Regardless, I am quite impressed with the musical and movie goals you and Philly seem to create for yourselves. I think there was an old "Music goals" thread a few years back, maybe I'll dig that up some time soon.

Wow. There's an actual album I've heard that LeMel hasn't!

I'll post my list in just a second.

I forgot to add Ritual De Habitual. That's something I've only heard about 10 minutes of but never gave my full attention to.

BTW, the Big Star record kicks ass so far.

This is true. It seems that, for every 10 records I hear, another 100 pop up that I could like. It's maddening, like trying to reach the horizon or something.

Right now, as you can tell from the list, I'm still in my "absorb as much material as you possibly can, with comprehension being a lower priority" phase. Incredibly fun, but arguably not the most productive in the long run.

Like other trip-hop albums, I think it's hard for a lot of people presently to "get" why they were so influential, as a lot of the sounds or styles have made their way into most of the genres (rock, hip hop, electronica, etc).

I too have never understood the whole 'Exchange' and '(Exchange)' thing. I'm not sure if the () version is supposed to be a "bonus" track, or what. I agree that Group Four is kind of a bore until the end as well. I actually like Black Milk though, but I'm admittedly a fan boy of Elisabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins, so that might be part of it (she also sings on Teardrop and Group Four on the album).

By the way, how cool are the samples on 'Man Next Door'? When the Levee Breaks by Led Zep AND 10:15 on a Saturday Night by The Cure??? NICE.
I still need to buy this one. And Protection too. The only albums I have of them are Blue Lines and No Protection (the dub version of Protection by Mad Professor which is brilliant). Somehow, I'm not really interested in their post-Mezzanine stuff.

Well my cousin gave me an mp3 disc with a bunch of albums on it, among them were Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Funeral, Rufus Wainright, Ocean Rain, Transformer...

I've listened to Yoshimi and Funeral. Yoshimi was pretty good, if a bit weird, though there were a bunch of tracks I enjoyed a fair bit. Funeral, however, was quite average. I don't see myself ever liking Arcade Fire.
