Sweet ironing, the DVD is sitting on my counter right now and I have to watch this tonight because it's due back tomorrow. Glad to hear it's a joy to watch.

Ha, you're so fucking punny.

I hope you enjoy it....I mean, it's sad to watch in a way, obviously...but I still really liked it.

Anton Corbijn is the shiznit, and I like Joy Division, so I'm sure I'll love it with all my heart and soul.

It's about as bizarre a comedy as I've seen in a while, too, but it's fully aware of that and uses it to great effect. You'll see half of the lines of this movie on T-shirts by the end of the summer.

7/10
I'm not generally a fan of Ferrell's brand of 'dumb' comedies, but despite this, I've found myself reluctantly laughing whenever I've seen a commercial for this on tv. Then I saw Ferrell and Reilly on Colbert in the past week or so, and they were really funny. I'll probably wait for dvd, but I think this one's going to merit a viewing.

But, goddam. I hadn't seen it in probably two years or so and it hit me again. I feel like I could be able to write up a pretty fuckin good post about my thoughts on the movie but right now I'm finding it difficult. Maybe one day I'll wake up and realize that I spent 150 grand on an education that I coulda got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library.

Anyway, yeah, I'm sure all of you have seen it. But I just felt like saying how much I love it.

And Ben Aflleck? Hilarious. A great performance. That guy, despite all the shit he has received in his career, can really steal a scene with the best of 'em. Shakespeare in Love is another example that comes to mind.

Robin Williams? Another guy who has taken a lot of shit. He delivers us such a great character. And he received an Oscar that he deserved.

"Hey it's me, Will. Remember? We went to kindergarten together."

"Don't forget the coffee!"

"Retainer!...retainer...keep your ear to the grindstone"

I could go on and on so I'll stop now.
I've thought of this movie a few times in the past few weeks. I agree, it's a great one. I own it too, but haven't seen it for a few years. I need to watch it again soon.

The stuff in the trailer barely scratches how bizarre the comedy in this movie gets. Ferrell and Reilly make a great comedic team, too... I'm glad they decided to team up again after Talladega. It'll be a good DVD movie, hopefully.

I did. Very much. As you said, even though Curtis still is shown as being somewhat of a bastard, he's still likable in the movie and you feel for him. Corbijn has some beautiful shots in the film, and the black and white really looks great. I watched a bit of the features afterwards and he said they chose the black and white because all of the photographs the band ever allowed published were in black and white, as well as their album covers. I also didn't realize while watching it that the actors themselves were actually playing and singing during the performance parts of the film, which is quite impressive in and of itself. I really liked how they gave meaning to the lyrics to some of the songs they showed in the film, definitely gave me more of a connection to some of those tracks. I have a feeling I'm going to be on a Joy Division kick for the next few days.

Admittedly, there were a few times where I had to rewind the film repeatedly because I couldn't figure out what the crap was being said, which is frustrating to me as I generally feel like I'm at least some what in the "know" about British slang/phrases. Cursed accents and foreign slang!

Cool, glad you liked it. After watching the film, I went back and rewatched all of the performances. I had assumed that they were playing and singing, actually. I'm not even sure if they are actors, or musicians who were recruited to act. The guy that played Curtis has been in at least one other film (24 hour party people), but he also sings in a band.

Like you, I'm on a Joy Division kick lately.

Now bugger off.

Gone Baby Gone

So Ben Affleck can direct, eh? And, damn, little Casey can act too!

I loved this movie and I came into it with very high expectations. My brother said it was the best movie he had seen all of last year and he's been harping on me for a long time to check it out. So I finally did.

Putting aside for a minute the Affleck Bros. and the amazing work that they put into this movie...this is just a straight up gripping, thrilling, powerful look at the darker side of us modern day humans.

The centerpiece character? Amanda McCready (no relation to the phenomenal lead guitarist of Pearl Jam)...a sweet and adorable and innocent 4 year old with a beautiful smile who has been taken from her home in Boston in the middle of the night. The whole movie revolves around her and the dozens of people involved in trying to bring her back safely. She was never out of my mind even when the story wanted me to let her go.

This movie is littered with low-lifes on both sides of the law and they are all drawn very well. There are some particularly intense scenes, too, including a midnight ransom exchange, a raid on a rundown drug house, and an armed robbery at a local bar...all of which end tragically and all of which were damn near unforgettable sequences.

I also loved the climax...the encounter between Casey and Morgan Freeman as Casey is forced to make the difficult, but CORRECT, decision. I was on the edge of my seat and I honestly had no idea what was gonna happen next. But I loved what did happen.

Ben Affleck has honestly done a great job. He loves the city of Boston and you can tell. Just an excellent crime thriller. I look forward to his next movie.

Anyway, I'm rambling (how the hell do movie reviewers come up with such cohesive write-ups anyway? those assholes) but I'd say that this probably was one of the best of 2007 and I strongly recommend it to anyone that hasn't seen it.

No mention of Amy Ryan??

And Casey's is decision that a lot of people would feel the other way about. I agree with you, but it's a great discussion point.

Amy Ryan was great but, for me, if anyone deserved to be nominated for this movie it was Casey.

I'll agree to the extent I thought he was even better in GBG than he was in James/Ford.

Batman Begins

Had to check it out after seeing The Dark Knight, which had been the first Batman movie that I'd seen. If not for Christopher Nolan's hand in creating the most recent movies I'd probably not look sideways at 'em. I guess I still had high expectations for what he'd be able to produce, even if the superhero type action movies aren't really my bag..

I really enjoyed Batman Begins, although not quite as much as The Dark Knight. For one thing - and it's probably already been said ad nauseum already but for good reason - it really made me appreciate the life that Ledger's Joker breathed into TDK. The villains in Batman Begins pale in comparison to that freaky guy. Good that the writers recognised the need to have a truly memorable villain after the lacklustre ones in BB. A slight peeve was that Liam Neeson occasionally seemed to be having flashbacks to his Jedi dude from The Phantom Menace, but then I guess you could also argue that Michael Caine's character in both movies was lifted straight from the guy in The Prestige, one of Nolan's other babies..

Anyway BB is still beautifully done and great fun to watch but I reckon I'll draw the line there and not watch the earlier films, based on the reviews. Well, maybe just the first one..

Also, how great is it that a franchise can be brought back from the dead like this? A welcome change from the remakes which can ruin the legacy. Would anyone like to have a crack at Alien 3??

Oh I also saw Garden State, which on first impressions was pretty darn good, especially the music - might want to get a hold of the soundtrack.
