Old Post 04-02-2008 03:49 PM - Tribute Bands?
I've never seen a U2 cover band before. 2U are coming to my town next Friday and the show has peaked my interest since I have major tour withdrawl. Are these shows fun or will I be really turned off? I realize it could never be the same as the real thing. But is this one decent? Thanks for any info!

I've only been to one U2 tribute show but it was fun. Especially once the audience got into it as well. Cause let's face it, you don't go to a U2 show to crowd surf, or to hang out in the mosh pit. You want to sing, and singing alone is awkward. Of course, the requisite is that they have to be good. IMHO recreating the exact sound isn't that much important, but recreating the feel of a U2 live show is.

Plus there is the added bonus of major gear porn being present. I don't know 2U but I reckon there is many gear to drool over. And talk about with the guitarist.

I've been to a couple. Never heard of 2U though. It depends on if you're into that kind of thing. I personally will never feel that a cover band can match up to the real band of course, but it's actually a lot of fun, and you get to hear U2 songs and party with your friends so I say go for it

Sorry I posted in the wrong forum. Good points. It's always fun to meet people who share your passion. And I've never seen an explorer up close.

I felt the same way before attending my first U2 Tribute band, but then it turned out to be an extremely fun thing to experience and I have not stopped supporting them since.
Before going to see the performance, I was thinking that it would be a huge let down, since I am such a long time fan of the band, but they (U2JT) proved me wrong. I guess it all started when I heard the warm up of "Streets" in San Diego. Chas, the guitar player has great talent and he is an extremely nice person to hang out with. This made the difference, getting to know the people performing and learning how much they appreciate your support, all while having a good time and enjoying the music from your favorite band in a small venue........it's the simple joys of life.
Ron the previous bass player was also an incredible guy, I was even invited to a bbq to his house ..great guy and Mike (Drummer)...can't say enough good things about him. Quality people.

I do not know where you live, but give 2U a chance. (And also check out U2JT.com)
Good times.

I've only seen UF and they're great! They're a very talented group of guys and are all really cool too. I also had mixed feelings before attending my first show, but I was open to the experience. I ended up really enjoying myself. I'm convinced that U2 fans are a really cool community of people, and much different from loyal fans of other concerts I've attended. When music like that brings people together, you know there's something special there. It's another opportunity to hang with your friends and make new ones while rockin out. Have fun!

If you are in LA, So CAL (in general) or the times that they play in Vegas...go see The Joshua Tree.

I've met Chas from JT too. Cool guy. Great guitar player. NICE guitars.

Elevation Canada are quite good and very nice people too. Met them in 2003. SO if you are in that neck o' the woods. Check them out.

Lest I forget The Unforgettable Fire, from NY. I've not seen them live yet but I've seen many clips of them playing and heard audio of them, via U2 Recording Yahoo group... And they are fantastic! And Mick, their "Edge" is a scholar, gentleman and judge of fine Edge-tone.

Thanks to Edge Orchestra and Redrocks for the nice comments about me and my band. You are both very kind.

If we doing anything right, I think it starts from the fact that we are, especially Jason and I, huge U2 fans going back to high school in the late 1980's. We started doing this because we loved U2's music and thought it would be fun. There are some tribute bands, not just U2 tributes, that are only doing it for the money and have said as much. They are not really fans of the band and I think it shows. Just have an open mind going in to it, see the band play and develop your own opinion.

Personally, I have always respected the talent and people in Elevation Canada and UF. They are both great bands, nice guys and have no misconceptions that they are really U2. Some bands seem to forget that. You will not meet two nicer guys than Brady (E Canada's Bono) and Mick, (UF's Edge).

As for the original question, you will find good and bad tribute bands, just as you would with any other kind of band you could go see play a club on a Friday night. Just have an open mind and go see what you think. You'll never know unless you try.

good luck

But your band IS quite good! I enjoyed seeing you play at the Cleveland Hard Rock and hope to get a chance to see you play again. Elevation Canada f&^%ing rock! LOVED the POPMART opening. (Nice Goldtop Les Paul!)

And to TheEdge U2JT... he's got it 100% right. You can see by his response that his band, Elevation Canada and The Unforgettable Fire are all "in it" for the right reasons... the love and respect U2 and their music. And the fact that all are just 100% nice people.

And a thanks to TheEdge U2JT for allowing me play a tune with them. That was damn good fun. He's got a Line 6 Variax that is silver sparkle like The Edges! (Love that guitar!). So it was good practice for (HOPEFULLY) being picked to play a tune with U2 at a show one day... hopefully...

There are U2 tribute bands that think they are U2? That's pretty funny.

But yeah some do it just for money and put Bono's vocals on their promo (and maybe even live?). <---- oh! Did I just go there? I went there

Just reprehensible, really.

I agree with Chas from U2JT. The key element to doing the U2 tribute thing well is being a fan. Everything pretty much springs from that. If the music is important to you, than you take the care to present it to best of your ability. So if the band you go to see is putting on the show that they themselves would want to see as fans, then you are probably going to connect with it in a meaningful way. If the band is just showing up for a paycheck, you'll see right through it.

So yeah... go! Go and check it out. I've heard from plenty of people that we kinda serve as their "Live U2 Life Support" between tours so hopefully you'll find the same experience.

If you live in the San Francisco Bay area, defintely check out Zoo Station! They are a great band and it's alot of fun to go. I haven't been to one of their shows in a long time but since my fellow U2 friend (FanAddict) has moved back in the area, I'm hoping to go again soon
